The hype over the movie Barbie was huge and all over social media. As a social media manager, I noticed that businesses such as clothing brands, beauty brands, and even restaurants got involved in the “Barbie trend.” Although I am generally not interested in watching movies, this one sparked my interest. We’re late, but I think we can still make our point.
My two main reasons were that I could create better content for my clients if I watched the movie and could incorporate the trend into my client’s social media pages. Most importantly, a rather personal reason was that I was obsessed with Barbie dolls as a kid! I mean, who wasn’t? We all dreamed of being a Barbie.
The visuals took me back to childhood, reminding me of the Barbie dream houses I loved. It was also great to see a Hijab-wearing Barbie, which inspired fashion diversity.
Girls from all over the world, from Arab to Western, came together through the fashion element of the movie during its release. It was a global event.
Although I didn’t expect to feel related to the movie, I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were some very relatable moments. As women, we all struggle with the many hats we must wear, whether being a businesswoman, mother, or juggling both. Not to mention the body image and struggles we face today, especially with the unrealistic expectations placed on us, partly because of social media. America Ferrera and Margot Robbie acknowledged this struggle we, as women, face. Indeed, in that scene which is an accurate portrayal, my girlfriends watching the movie with me were silent. At that moment, we all understood each other’s struggle.
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie; the humor was great, and it had me laughing quite often. Spending this weekend with my friends was a great way to stimulate thought-provoking conversations. As young Arab women, we delved into the differences between our culture and the Western culture and how women in the West still feel oppressed despite their many privileges. This led us to wonder whether today’s world is too permissive and whether individuals with privilege cannot fully appreciate their blessings.
